Separate loan maturity from amortization
Amortization determines how the scheduled payment pays down principal. Maturity determines when the outstanding debt becomes due. A loan amortized over 25 years but due in five years usually leaves a balloon balance after its scheduled maturity payment. That balloon requires a separate repayment or financing plan.
